Uber has caught flak in the past few years for its treatment of drivers, due in part to its labeling of them as “self-employed” rather than “employees.” But now, the modern taxi company is extending a benefits package to its drivers in the UK, according to a Reuters report Thursday.
Uber will begin offering a health plan to drivers who have made at least 500 trips. All the drivers have to contribute, according to the report, is £2 (about $2.60) per week. This will cover sickness, injury and jury leave.
The plan Uber is joining is run by the Association of Independent Professionals & the Self-Employed. The decision comes only months after a British tribunal ruled against Uber for failing to provide some basic benefits.
Whether this new plan will affect Uber’s appeal of the ruling remains to be seen.
